Module 8
Arranging a date out.
1 Check the cd rom vocabulary section module 8 exercises  1,2 and 3.
2 Then Check the following explanation about thestructures and expressions to make suggestions.

Suggesting ideas to arrange activities

The most common expressions to suggest an idea are

Let’s: Let’s go to the cinema.

How about: How about the cinema? / How about going to the cinema?

Why don’t: Why don’t we go to the cinema?

Pay attention to the following conversation:

Maria: Hi Mark! What do you want to do this weekend?

Mark: Nothing especial, why?

Maria: Why don’t we go to Edinburg?

Mark: I don’t know. I don’t have much money. Hey! How about my uncle’s farm?  It isn’t very far, and we can stay there.

Maria: I don’t really like the countryside. Let’s visit my sister in new castle and we can stay in her house.

Mark: That’s a great idea.

If you notice, we use the three expressions: “Why don’t we go to Edinburg?, How about my uncle’s farm?, Let’s visit my sister in new castle.” To make suggestions. They express the same idea, but the their difference is in their structure which is different.

When we use “Why don’t we go to the cinema? ; why don’t we watch a video?; why don’t we play tennis?” we are suggesting the ideas of going to the cinema, or the idea of watching a video, or the idea of playing tennis. We do that by making a negative question in present simple.
If we make the same question with the affirmative for of the auxiliary verb we are asking for reasons:

Why do we go to the cinema? Because we want to watch a movie.

Why do we want to watch a video? Because we are bored.

With the question why don’t we talk about suggestions?

With “how about” happen something similar. We express a suggestion.

How about that French restaurant?, How about the river near my house?

We express the suggestion and a place: How about the disco club in Swantom Street?

But we can use a verb after the expression how about: How about going to the cinema? How about studying English?

We can use any verb after How about, but we have to add “ing” to this verb.

Anyway we express suggestion with this expression by making questions:

How about studying English?  How about that French restaurant?

Let’s: also expresses suggestions but it do it in an affirmative
way.

Let’s go to the cinema, Let’s study English tonight, Let’s play tennis.

If you notice these expressions have the same Idea but different structures.

Why don’t we play tennis?, it’s the same to say How about playing tennis?, which is the same to say How about tennis?, which is the same to say, Let’s play tennis.

  Exercise:

Put the words in the correct order:

Andrea: on Saturday/ you/ go to/ want to/ the cinema/ Do?

Joe: a good idea/ That’s!/ on/ What’s.

Andrea: Bollywood/ new/ There’s/a/ musical.

Joe: That sort of thing/ I/ like/ really/don’t.

         We/ don’t/ Why/ go/fil/to the new Will Smith / film?

Andrea: Ok./ cinema/ eight/ meet/ the/  let’s/ outside/ at.

3 Go to your cd rom and watch the video section module 8 comprenhension 1 and 2, the script and record yourself.
